As founder and executive director of the nonprofit <strong>Girls Garage<\/strong> (formerly Project H Design), she blends hands-on construction with social justice and participatory design to transform communities and change narratives about who gets to design and build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Foundational Vision &amp; Projects<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2010, Emily co\u2011created <strong>Studio H<\/strong>, a design\/build curriculum for high school students in rural Bertie County, North Carolina. Their work culminated in the now\u2011iconic <strong>Windsor Farmers Market Pavilion<\/strong>, a full-scale public architecture project built by students and featured in the 2013 documentary <em>If You Build It<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Highlights of Emily\u2019s built work include modular classrooms, tiny homes for the unhoused, greenhouse structures, school libraries, public bus stops, and playground installations\u2014all designed and built by youth, often pro bono.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Girls Garage: Tools for Equity &amp; Agency<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2013, Emily relaunched the organization as <strong>Girls Garage<\/strong> in Berkeley, California\u2014creating the first dedicated after-school maker space for girls aged 9\u201318. The 5,000 sq ft workshop allows all youth to learn carpentry, welding, and fabrication in a supportive, inclusive environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To date, Girls Garage has completed <strong>170+ built projects<\/strong> across the U.S., blending civic design with mentorship and youth leadership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emily\u2019s guiding mantra, \u201c<strong>Fear Less. By equipping underserved youth with real skills\u2014and amplifying their voices in the design of public spaces\u2014she rewrites who belongs in the building trades. Her approach merges design with empathy: every built structure reflects the identity and agency of those who build it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emily often asks, <strong>\u201cWho builds our world?
