Overview
Boyzone was one of the most successful Irish boy bands of the 1990s and early 2000s. Known for their heartfelt ballads, harmonized vocals, and polished pop style, they achieved massive commercial success across Europe and beyond. With their clean-cut image and romantic appeal, they became icons of the boy band era, often credited alongside Take That for pioneering the boy band phenomenon in the UK and Ireland.
Formation and Rise to Fame
Boyzone was formed in 1993 by music manager Louis Walsh, who wanted to replicate the success of Take That with an Irish group. After auditions in Dublin, the final lineup was selected, including a young Ronan Keating and Stephen Gately, who would go on to become the group’s most recognizable voices.
Their debut single, a cover of The Four Seasons’ “Working My Way Back to You,” was released in 1994, but it was their version of “Love Me for a Reason“ (originally by The Osmonds) that shot them to fame, peaking at No.2 on the UK charts.
Peak Success
Between 1995 and 1999, Boyzone dominated the UK and Irish charts with a string of hit singles and albums. Their formula of sentimental ballads, glossy production, and charming personalities earned them legions of fans — particularly teen audiences.
Hit Singles Included:
- “No Matter What” – from Whistle Down the Wind, their only UK No.1 written by Andrew Lloyd Webber
- “Words” – Bee Gees cover that topped UK charts
- “Picture of You” – upbeat pop track featured in Mr. Bean
- “Father and Son” – Cat Stevens cover
- “Baby Can I Hold You” – Tracy Chapman cover
- “When the Going Gets Tough” – Billy Ocean cover (for Comic Relief)
Notable Albums:
- Said and Done (1995)
- A Different Beat (1996)
- Where We Belong (1998)
- By Request (1999) – compilation album featuring all their hits
They had an impressive run of 21 UK Top 40 singles, including 6 UK No.1s, and sold over 25 million records worldwide.
Ronan Keating’s Solo Career
In 1999, while still part of Boyzone, Ronan Keating launched a hugely successful solo career, with his debut single “When You Say Nothing at All” (from Notting Hill) becoming a global hit. His solo success partly contributed to the group’s decision to take a break in 2000.
Tragedy and Reunion
In 2007, Boyzone reunited and began touring again, re-energizing their fan base. Tragedy struck in October 2009, when Stephen Gately passed away suddenly at age 33 due to a congenital heart defect while vacationing in Majorca. His death deeply affected the band and fans worldwide.
They paid tribute with the song “Gave It All Away,” released in 2010, which featured Stephen’s final vocals. It became a Top 10 hit in the UK and Ireland.
Later Years and Farewell
The band continued to tour and record as a four-piece, releasing:
- Brother (2010) – tribute to Gately
- BZ20 (2013) – marking 20 years together
- Thank You & Goodnight (2018) – final studio album
The 2018 farewell album included collaborations with artists like Ed Sheeran and Gary Barlow. Boyzone wrapped up their 25-year journey with a final tour in 2019, officially disbanding afterward.

Legacy
Boyzone helped lay the foundation for the boy band explosion of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Their music, driven by soaring melodies and tender lyrics, became part of the soundtrack for a generation. As one of the first Irish pop acts to achieve international superstardom, they paved the way for acts like Westlife and The Script.
Stephen Gately remains a beloved figure in Irish music, remembered for his openness, talent, and gentle spirit. Boyzone’s enduring appeal lies in their genuine brotherhood, heartfelt performances, and the emotional connection they maintained with their fans over decades.
