Overview
The Corrs are an Irish pop-rock and Celtic folk band known for their seamless blend of contemporary pop melodies with traditional Irish instrumentation. Combining lush vocal harmonies, violin, tin whistle, and bodhrán with polished pop arrangements, The Corrs became international stars in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Their heartfelt lyrics, family chemistry, and cultural pride helped them achieve massive commercial success while representing Irish music on the global stage.
Family Roots & Formation
The Corrs are siblings from Dundalk, a musical family where Irish traditional music was part of everyday life. They formed the band in 1990 while auditioning for the 1991 film The Commitments. Though only Andrea and Sharon appeared in the movie, the experience helped launch their music career.
Their unique sound—a mix of pop-rock and Irish folk—caught the attention of American music producer David Foster, leading to a record deal with Atlantic Records.
Breakthrough Success
The Corrs released their debut album, Forgiven, Not Forgotten (1995), which was a hit in Ireland and Europe. The album introduced their signature mix of catchy pop tracks and Celtic instrumentals. Notable songs included:
Their second album, Talk On Corners (1997), was a global breakthrough. Initially slow to gain traction, a re-release with remixed singles like “So Young,” “What Can I Do,” and “Only When I Sleep” helped it soar to the top of UK charts, eventually becoming the best-selling album in the UK in 1998.
International Stardom
The Corrs solidified their international fame with In Blue (2000), which leaned more into mainstream pop. The album featured:
- “Breathless” – their first UK No.1 hit, produced by Robert John “Mutt” Lange
- “Radio”
- “Give Me a Reason”
In Blue marked their peak in global popularity, charting high in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and Asia. Their live album Unplugged (1999) and Christmas album Home (2005) further showcased their range and musical roots.
Hiatus and Personal Pursuits
Following years of intense touring and success, The Corrs went on hiatus in 2006 to focus on family and solo projects. Andrea, Sharon, and Jim all released solo albums, while Caroline took time for family life.
During this period, Andrea also pursued acting and published a memoir (Barefoot Pilgrimage), while Sharon became a judge on The Voice of Ireland and continued performing solo.
Reunion and Recent Activity
In 2015, The Corrs reunited and released the album White Light, followed by Jupiter Calling (2017), produced by T Bone Burnett. These albums marked a more mature, reflective tone, mixing folk and acoustic elements with modern storytelling.
While not chart-topping like earlier efforts, the reunion was welcomed by fans and led to a handful of live shows across Europe.
